Rigg Beck, Newlands Valley

Built on the site of the Purple House in the Newlands Valley, Rigg Beck is a modern interpretation of the traditional Lakeland style. Designed by London architects Knox Bhavan, many of the structural aspects of the construction, from foundations to steel frame design, were designed by Reuben Gibson at Tweddell & Slater.

  • This £1.65 million house was constructed using local materials but offered a modern and rigorously detailed interpretation of Lakeland vernacular architecture.

    The nature of the site, the level of detail required and the strict constraints imposed by the architecture made this a very challenging project to bring to completion.

  • The structure primarily consists of a two to three storey steelwork in a mixture of sway and braced frames tied together with concrete floor diaphragms and roof bracing. This was constructed onto pile and ground beam foundations.
